(1) Martin Laycock, of Leeds, and Eliz. Clapham, of Beamsley. (See
Dugdale's Visitation,
ed. Surtees Society, p. 156.) If she was daughter of George Clapham by Martha
Heber, she could only have been eleven years old.-C.B.N.
(2) See Ibid., p. 20.
(3) Thomas Wilson was the founder of the family that so long occupied a
prominent place in Leeds history. His grandson married Elizabeth, daughter of
Richard Sykes, and thereby became brother-in-Law of Ralph Thoresby, F.R.S. His
great-grandson, Richard, was Recorder of Leeds from 1729 to 1761, and was
succeeded by his son Richard, who died in 1776; brother of Dr. Christopher
Wilson, Bishop of Bristol, whose representative is Andrew Montagu, Esq., of
Ingmanthorpe. The bishop's brother William died Mayor of Leeds, 28th March,
1754, leaving an only child, wife of Thomas Norcliffe, Esq., of Langton. Other
descendants of the bishop are Lord Grimthorpe and the well-known family of
Beckett. -C.B.N.
