Wales, Welsh CYMRU, country of
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. On three sides
the boundaries of Wales are natural, with the shores of the Dee estuary
and Liverpool Bay to the north, the Irish Sea to the west, and the
coastline of the Severn estuary on the south. The eastern boundary - that
with England - is an administrative, though not political, frontier. It
was created in 1536 as part of the Act of Union, finally and effectively
linking England and Wales.
