picked me up, hugged me and slapped my back.

“Velcome Mr. Bob, Our Professor,” they said as they danced around me. We all laughed until the tears ran down our faces. A telex reporting the successful school was sent to my boss, who was once more back in the States. There was nothing but praise for this first school. After such a disastrous start it just went like a dream and our agents never forgot that first Service school in Finland.

These overseas schools if anything were far too successful, All our overseas agents wanted them and requests got out of hand for the company was being asked to travel all over the world so much so that I was expected to travel from a school in one country on a Friday evening to fly to another country to give a weekend school, perhaps two after which flying off on the Sunday to start a new school somewhere else on the Monday!. This was mad I needed help if only to prepare the schools but my chief just said “We know you can do it”

Things came to a head and I resigned the post I saw an opportunity to take a Teaching Certificate all costs paid so joined “Garnette Teacher Training College for a year. I really enjoyed it and learnt a great deal. Only thing they got wrong was that there would be jobs waiting for us there were very few

I applied for one as Senior Instructor at Farnborough I was short listed with a dozen others but lost the post as there was an Honours BA who filled it. The gentleman however could not take up the post for a full term so I was asked in again with the offer to take up the post on a temporary basis. I was out of work so why not.

I started work again teaching but knew this was only to last three months so naturally I applied for everything going from our own notice board and news papers but without success.

Actually I applied for 5 posts within my own department yet had no replies from any of them. When the Head of department was contacted direct why this should be his answer was: ”I’m sorry Wallis, you’ve put me on a spot!” I asked why? to which he replied:” You hold now a Senior Lecturer’s position which we know you can do on your head, but these other posts you have applied for are at a lower salary, we could not now lower your salary the union would create merry hell” but I’ll be without a job at the end of term! “Yes we know that but what can we do!”.

So I returned to Clark International who had asked me if I would open a new Training school just north of Derby where they had purchased Crown Cranes a new Mobil Hydraulic crane factory.

As these new “Mobil road cranes where produced Clark International arranged for them to be distributed to their agents throughout Europe and I was giving service schools in Derby for our own staff and our agents to give them knowledge of the machines.

The Clark factory in Camberley was being sold up and as Clark had already taken over the huge LIMA Crane manufacturers in America so wanted schools covering these.

I took the job on which also involved my opening another training school in Strasbourg. Actually before I left Clarks to take my teacher training I have fitted the school out and given a few schools there. My main job was to close the Blackbush and Camberley schools and divide their contents between Strasbourg and Derby. It was
