WILLIAM MONTAGUE,
DUKE OF MANCHESTER

SIR HENRY MONTAGU, grandson of sir Edward Montagu, chief justice of the Common Pleas, who died 1557, was brought up a lawyer, and in 1616 was made chief justice of the King's Bench. In 1620 he was created viscount Mandeville; and in 1625, earl of Manchester. He died 1642, at a great age. His Con, Edward, second earl, ran too much with the times, but concurring n the restoration, was made lord chamberlain of the fehold, and knight of the Garter, 1661. He died 1671, æt. 69. His grandson, Charles, fourth earl, having led a public life in many high employments, was created duke of Manchester, 1719, and died 1722. Robert, third duke, his second son, died 1762; and his son George, fourth duke, died 1788.
     His grace succeeded his father 1788, was born 1768, and married, 1793, lady Susan, daughter of the duke of Gordon, by whom he has issue. His grace has taken no part in public affairs.

GEORGE JOHN FREDERICK SACKVILLE,
DUKE OF DORSET

Of a house of great antiquity, great genius, and great fame. Thomas Sackville, allied by hi; grandmother (Boleyne) to queen Elizabeth, a poet of magnificent invention, and a vigorous command of language, filled many high offices in the glorious reign of that heroine, and was by her created baron Buckhurst, of Buckhurst, in Sussex, in 1567, and by James I earl of Dorset, in 1603: he died 1608 Richard, his great grandson, fifth earl, died 1677, and was father of earl Charles, also a poet, who died 1706. Lionel, his fun, seventh earl, was, in 1720, created, by George I duke of Dorset. He died 1768, and was succeeded by his son Charles, second duke, likewise a poet, who died 1769; and was succeeded by his nephew, John Frederick, late duke, who died 1799, and his widow is remarried to lord Whitworth.
     His grace, now fourth duke, born 1793, is a minor at Harrow school.
