HENRY PELHAM CLINTON,
DUKE OF NEWCASTLE.

THE Clintons have enjoyed the rank of barons from the reign of Edward I. Edward, ninth lord Clinton, was created, by queen Elizabeth, earl of Lincoln, in 1752. Henry, seventh earl of Lincoln, at a time when all the old family estates were dissipated, revived its splendor by a fortunate marriage with Lucy, daughter of Thomas, lord Pelham, and sister of Thomas, duke of Newcastle. He died 1728, æt. 44; but his son Henry, ninth earl, succeeded, in 1768, to the dukedom of Newcastle-under-Line, created by a patent, granted in 1756 to duke Thomas, (Pelham,) with remainder to his aforesaid nephew. Henry, thus become duke of Newcastle, was succeeded by his son Thomas, second duke of this family, who died 1795 and was succeeded by his son, then an infant.

Hugh, who thus succeeded to the earldom of Northumberland, in 1750, was created duke of Northumberland in 1766. His duchess died in 1776, and he died 1786.
His grace, Hugh, second duke, born 1742 devoted himself early to a military life, and served, when earl Percy, with much distinction in the American war.
